Priyanka Chopra



Priyanka Chopra is an Indian film actress and former Miss World who works in Bollywood films.

Former Miss India World and later becoming Miss World 2000, Chopra made her acting debut with the Tamil film Thamizhan (2001). Two years later, she made her Bollywood debut with Anil Sharma's The Hero: Love Story of a Spy and had her first commercial success with her second release, Andaaz from the same year, for which she won a Filmfare Best Female Debut Award. Becoming the second woman to win the Filmfare Best Villain Award for her critically acclaimed performance in Abbas-Mustan's Aitraaz (2004), Chopra later went on to deliver commercial success with films like Mujhse Shaadi Karogi (2004), Krrish (2006), her biggest commercial success so far, and Don - The Chase Begins Again (2006), establishing herself as a popular actress.

Miss World 2000 Priyanka Chopra, the fifth Indian to win the coveted crown was born on 18th July 1982 in Mumbai to Capt. Dr. Ashok Chopra and Dr. Madhu Chopra.

Her upbringing in a family belonging to the army made her travel widely all over the country and exposed her to the multi cultural Indian society. Priyanka was a resident student of La Martiniere Girls College in Lucknow and studied for a short while at Maria Goretti College in Bareilly. Having completed class 10th from Boston USA her ambition was to become a software Engineer or a Criminal Psychologist.

Priyanka's interest in modeling implanted in her a desire to win the Miss World beauty pageant, a dream she claims to have held for six years. Back in India from US she participated in the Femina miss India contest and then the World pageant which changed her life drastically. Her family, especially her mother has been her sole inspiration.

Priyanka is a genuine, selfless, down to earth, warm and loving personality. She has a penchant for Indian music and dance, a flair for writing poetry and short stories, enjoys reading and theatre, and has worked for several social welfare programmes. Priyanka who believes that her power with words as one of her strongest personality traits, was a topper in English language and has won prizes for Extempore Speech and also for singing and dancing. Priyanka was the only Indian from her class in US to have been selected at state level for the National opus Honour choir.

Priyanka did a three month acting course in Mumbai and entered the film industry. She debuted in a Tamil movie titled 'Thamizhan' (2002), opposite Tamil superstar Vijay. And her debut Hindi film was the big budget 'The Hero: Love Story of a Spy' (2003) which was a flop. She became more known from her next film 'Andaaz' (2003), for which she won her first Filmfare Award. Her other notable films are 'Aitraaz' and 'Mujse Shaadi Karoge' which established her as one of Bollywood's top actresses.

Priyanka was born on July 18, 1982 in Ranchi, Jharkhand, India to Ashok and Madhu Chopra née Sankaran, both doctors.She also has a brother.Her father is a Punjabi-Bengali-Marathi and her mother is a Tamil-Malayali-Kannada from Tamil Nadu. Her mother's family members were from Madurai and Sivakasi in Tamil Nadu, Udupi in Karnataka and Kozhikode in Kerala.

She spent part of her childhood in Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh. Her family frequently moved since her father was in the Army. She studied at La Martiniere Girls' College in Lucknow, as a young girl and later came to the United States, where she was a student at Newton North High School, in Newton, Massachusetts and North Delta Senior Secondary High School in North Delta before returning to India to complete high school at Army Public School (Bareilly). She began college at Jai Hind College in Mumbai but left after winning the Miss World pageant. Priyanka's Father is also a very good singer.

Priyanka was crowned Miss India World and later Miss World in 2000. In the same year, Lara Dutta and Diya Mirza, both from India, won the Miss Universe and Miss Asia Pacific crowns, in a rare triple.When she won the Miss World crown, she became the fifth Indian woman to win the title, and the fourth Indian woman to win in a span of seven years.

After winning the Miss World title, Priyanka became an actress. She first acted in a Tamil film Thamizhan (2002) and since then has acted in many Bollywood films. She then acted in a series of flops until Mujhse Shaadi Karogi in (2004) which was her second hit. She followed it up with Aitraaz, a Hindi remake of the Demi Moore-starrer Disclosure which was yet another box office success.

In the same year, she participated in a world tour aptly titled "Temptations 2004" with Bollywood's leading stars, including Shahrukh Khan, Rani Mukerji, Saif Ali Khan, Preity Zinta and Arjun Rampal.In 2005, she had many releases, though most did moderately at the box office.But her film Bluffmaster which released late in 2005 was one of the biggest hits of 2005.

In 2006, she worked in two of the most successful films of the year - Krrish and Don - The Chase Begins Again. She has also recently been on the hit chat show "Koffee with Karan".

Priyanka Chopra was voted Sexiest Asian Woman of 2006 in Eastern Eye, an Asian newspaper published in Britain.
